Today we remember Artemis "10 Items or Less" Jenks, the two-time National Shopping Cart Racing champion, who died on this date six years ago in a tragic mid-race crash. The collision, which injured three other racers in addition to claiming the life of Jenks, occurred when Jenks' long-time rival, Mario "SKU check" Lathers, threw an illegal oversized watermelon into the lower rack of Jenks' cart. As a result, the seasoned cart racer's buggy was thrown off balance and rolled over three times, killing Jenks instantly. Lathers was fined and stripped of his titles and license to race grocery carts, but never faced criminal charges for the incident, causing outrage among Jenks' family and his considerable fan base. This monument on Galvez St. still stands in memory of Jenks and his contributions to the sport.
