Welcome, and thank you for joining us on Cable Access 9 for another edition of Mysteries of the Concrete Jungle! Today on our program, we examine one of the great mysteries that has puzzled paranormal scientists and inspired amateur ghost hunters for generations: the so-called “Wandering Rock of Family Dollar.”
First, a little history of the Wandering Rock for those of you that may not know.
It was a hot afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi on the eighth of August, 1959. Ms. Beatrice Waits had driven to the nearby Family Dollar to by some lemonade and ice cream to cool her family off. Upon returning to her car, Waits observed a small rock near her car, but thought nothing of it and left the parking lot.
Halfway home, Waits realized she had forgotten the ice cream, and returned to the Family Dollar, securing the exact same parking spot. When she again returned to her car, Waits found the same rock – a full eighteen inches away!
“I was just blown away!” Waits would later tell supernatural investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who definitely investigate legitimate paranormal claims and don’t just make money on the stories of liars and mentally ill people. “I knew rocks don’t just move on their own. There had to be some sort of supernatural force at work. I mean, what else could possibly be happening?
Ed and Lorraine dug right in to the case in a completely legitimate and scientific manner, and found at least thirteen instances of the rock inexplicably moving position in the parking lot. The rock sometimes moved as far as seven feet. The incidents occurred almost regularly, as long as the Warrens left the Family Dollar for at least fifteen minutes and came back later without setting up any video equipment or surveillance of any kind.
Will ever know what drove the Wandering Rock on its aimless journey across the hot pavement of the Jackson Family Dollar? What dark spirits may seek to scare shoppers away from discount groceries and household goods? Did the Waits family ever get to eat ice cream?
Perhaps some things are simply fated to become…
